On writing…

Over at CampinGuy.com I try to keep the “bloggy stuff” to a minimum and just post original articles I write. Unfortunately, when I’m as tired as I have been recently I don’t get much writing done. Hard to be creative when your eyes keep closing ya’ know. But, I’m making a tremendous effort (with the help of a little coffee of course!) to write more on both blogs. I just wish I was able to use something like Zempt to edit and save posts without having to drop into the browser interface. To accomplish that I’m sure it’d require me moving the site to a different host. Not that that would be a bad idea. $18 a month is a lot of money for the frustration and lack of customer oriented service I get from my host. Ooops! I just think I sold myself on moving campinguy.com to my other host.

Online Music

If you’re thinking about the trying the new Music Match music download service, Adam over at Bladam has written quite a bit on the subject and you should definitely check out it out. He’s used the service, tested the DRM by trying the songs he downloaded on other computers, tested the songs in other players, and even tried burning cd’s (answering my question). He’s also spec’d out what he believes would be the ideal music service with ideas sure to appease everyone. Thanks for the note Adam!

Musicmatch embraces music sales

So Musicmatch, makers of the free jukebox software, has come out with a PC version of the popular Apple iTunes pay per track, music download. For just $0.99 US you can pick up any track from your favorite artist. Not too bad. Albums are available for as low as $9.99 US.

It Pays to be a Member

Interestingly enough, because SBC Yahoo! is my ISP, I’m entitled to a premium membership at Launch.com. This means unlimited music, videos, and the ability to make my own streaming internet radio station. I wonder if there is a way I can integrate the station into my site? For the first time since leaving AOL and joining Yahoo! I actually feel like a member of a community.

A Little Change

Did a little color change on the ol’ style sheet (thanks to TopStyle!) I thought a little change might do the weblog some good. I’m still working on a new theme and layout for the site but it’s not much of a priority at the moment, paying gigs take precedence ya’ know. So, when I get some free time, eventually I’ll get the new style up. How would I describe my new design: industrial.

Ergonomics be damned.

Oddly enough, this is my normal work space at home. I took this photo using the memory stick in our camcorder.

Things to take note of: laptop (sans Ansel Adams screen saver), monitor running music videos, Sony Clie, notebook, boxes and boxes of slides, John Gierach book, San Jose Sharks faceplate on Nokia telephone, 5000k bulb in desk lamp (for color and because I can buy them at work). Things off camera: tower, slide scanner, flatbed scanner, photoprinter, cameras, digital camera, camcorder.

The desk top actually sits 36″ high with the keyboard underneath. Since I couldn’t find a desk big enough I put together a couple of two drawer file cabinets and an old solid core interior door from a friend to make the desktop. Door handle hole works nicely for cords.

Greenspun takes a look at RIAA and Friendship

Kick save and a beauty!

“Hi. I’m Windows XP. I notice you’ve attached a DV device. What would you like to do with the video?”

What an operating system. Smart. Intuitive. Easy. So much NOT the pain in the ass that was Windows 98 and ME. Still much nicer than Windows 2000.

I think it’d be cool if you could get different “persona” for XP. Then when it gives you an error message or asks you something it would ask in the persona of your choice.

For Instance:
Mr. T (unknown file type): “I pity the fool who tries to open an unknown file type.”
Mr. Scott of Star Trek (full hard disk): “I’m givin’ ‘er all she got captain but she’ don’ go’ any more.”
President Clinton (unplugged device): “I did not have relations with your digital camera.”
Dirty Harry (couldn’t establish connection): “Go ahead punk! Make my day!”

You get the idea. What ones do you think would make good persona for Windows?

Congratulations!

Congratulations to the new Daddy.
