Christmas Don’t Pass Me By

I used to really enjoy the holiday season. Of course, I worked in retail and the holiday season started in August. Since we’ve moved out of retail and on with our professional lives it seems like Christmas time is here quicker and passes faster and faster each year. So this year, I’m making an effort not to let it pass me by unnoticed.

Yesterday I loaded up the car and we went over to our favorite rural lot an picked up a beautiful, beautiful noble fir (my favoirte). I think this is the earliest we’ve ever gotten a Christmas tree and I have to admit, shopping early has it’s advantages. The prices were still good, the trees weren’t over shopped, and there were a lot of beautiful, good quality trees.

The other thing is Christmas music. I was sooooo burnt-out on Christmas music that listening to it in mi casa wasn’t even an option. Blech! 14-19 hours a day of Christmas music since August? Inconceivable. But this year, I’m actually thinking about adding a couple of ol’ crooners Christmas stuff to my collection.

iTunes has Frank Sinatra’s Christmas album which sounds really good. It doesn’t say if it’s been digitally remastered or not but the clarity and sound are fabulous. Alos on the list are Nat King Cole (to replace a lost CD), and Bing Crosby.

If you have any favorites you’d like to suggest feel free to post a comment, email me (loydatdailythingdotcom) or aim me (thecmpnguy).

It’s Element-ary My Dear!

Dave Winer was soliciting ideas about a new vehicle this morning so I sent him a short email about the Honda Element. I’ve been mightily impressed since I got mine. It’s a great car. I’m especially impressed with how well it handles during wet and rainy conditions. I think I have never had a car that handled this well.

Oh, and before you tell me it’s a box, take a closer look at the 2004’s. They’re more rounded and less boxy than the previous years making them look more like the small SUV class the DMV puts them in.

Not to mention they’re great for hauling 3 passengers AND still being able to fit a Christmas tree.

Fatal Exception Error

The new BSOD (Blue Screen of Death for all you non-techies) is the “Fatal Exception Error”. Oh yeah, the whole platform doesn’t crash like Win9x would, but you still have to restart or forget working in the application you were just working in because you’ll get the error again.

Moving to the Mac now. I hate losing 2 hours of work. I know, I know, I usually save multiple times when I’m working but I was on a roll with the long piece of code I was working on. Oh well, f#$% it. Water under the bridge. Back to work.

Microsoft Offers Amnesty to Users of Pirated WinXP in the UK

NewsFactor Network: “MicrosoftRelevant Products/Services from Microsoft has moved to clamp down on software pirates in the UK after discovering what it describes as a large volume of high quality counterfeit versions of Windows XP Latest News about Windows XP.

Kicking off its Windows XP Counterfeit Project, the software giant has invited “anyone unsure as to the legitimacy of their Windows XP software” to submit their products for analysis.

Software that is found to be counterfeit will be replaced for free subject to the terms and conditions of its offer, Microsoft promised.

“This is a great opportunity for users to confirm the authenticity of Windows XP software whilst helping gather vital information about illegal traders,” said Alex Hilton, license compliance manager at Microsoft.”

Don’t F#$% with Brandon Fuller Bitch

Brandon Fuller: “So at the pool, there are tons of chairs but they are all taken by books and towels. I guess these inanimate objects need a nice place to sit just as we humans do. Furthermore, these books and towels show up earlier and earlier each day. Some books and towels get up at the crack of dawn and find their chair. Later in the day, some humans eventually inhabit the chairs for some short period of time before going in the pool or leaving for lunch. Then the books and towels are back on duty.

I was frustrated by this the last two days but after hanging out on the pool ledge for up to an hour I would eventually run over as some people left and snag the chair. Time to take the law into my own hands.”

Welcome to Gmail

Here’s the Thanksgiving letter that greeted me when I went to sign into Gmail this morning. Why do people like Google again? Oh yeah, it’s the people.

A Gobble approach to email.

In 1621, a few hundred Pilgrims and Native Americans sat down to celebrate a bountiful harvest. The feast lasted three days, and included fowl, venison, fish, berries, watercress, lobster, dried fruit, clams, and plums. There was no pumpkin pie, however. There was also an alarming lack of user-friendly webmail services.

Now, 383 years later, it’s once again time to celebrate what has come to be known as Thanksgiving, a time to gather with family and friends and give thanks for all that we have. We have many things to be thankful for. But mostly, we are thankful for you, our users, who remind us of why we work so hard all year and why we love what we do. That’s better than all the dried fruit and clams in the world.

Happy Thanksgiving! Thank you for making our approach to email yours.

Gobble gobble,
The Gmail Team

Happy Thanksgiving

Happy Thanksgiving to all of you’s from all of me.
