Marc Canter Is Not Using Backpack

Marc Canter isn't using 37 Signals latest webapp, Backpack and he's got some good reasons why.

Marc: "I was all jazzed to join and use Backpack - as it's a key function of a DLA - having a virtual storage place for random, notes. etc.

But they want to charge me for storing photos.

Well dudes - I'm a media guy and there ain't no way in HELL I'm using Backpack if I can't store a few photos. Ever hear of Flickr? How 'bout Buzznet?

What you SHOULD be doing is montioring end-user behavior patterns and ascertain where the seam is BETWEEN paid and free. That seam is defined as when folks get VALUE our of software - which is defined differently for many people.

So once you find yourself using software, getting value out of software, relying upon software - THEN - it's time to pay - not before.

This is a basic tenet of the 'new paradigm of tools.'"
