Updating The D70: Easy As Pie
Just completed the firmware update on my Nikon D70. Other than the fact that the new menus are black/grey/yellow instead of blue/grey there's a significant change to the NEF storage algorithm.
On the 512mb Lexar Pro card I use previously shooting NEF (RAW) only I was able to store 49 images. If I shot NEF with Basic JPG (2 files) I could only store 44 shots. Now, with the new algorithm, I can store 87 NEF (RAW) files or 77 NEF with Basic JPG files. That's almost a 60% increase.
Very nice.
Oh. The update was incredibly easy to do with my Mac.
Simply download the files.
Format your CF card.
Drag file A to your CF card in USB mode.
Eject your camera.
Go to Firmware Version in the Menu and select update.
Let it do it's thing.
Check the version of you firmware after you get the "done" screen.
Reformat the card.
Plug it into your Mac again.
Drag version B to the drive.
Eject the camera. And do the Firmware Version - Update thing again.
When it says "done" a second time, check your firmware and if both version A and B are updated reformat your CF card.
It's a snap. You can find full instructions as well as the update files here. That link also has the files if you're on a Windows machine. Installation directions for Windows will vary from what I have above.
