Playing With The Big Boys Now
I must say, Ubuntu Linux is the most easy to manage, user friendly, strain of Linux that I have ever worked with. Unlike some distributions of Linux (especially the free ones), Ubuntu offers an automatic update service free of charge that helps you keep your programs up to date. Better yet, you don't have to screw with it. It's done. It works.
On that note I should also note how the Windows-eque Gnome Desktop is super easy for anyone migrating from Windows. The SUDO permission structure will be familiar to anyone used to working on a Mac. Ubuntu is truly one to give Microsoft and Apple a run for the money.
I've got mine set up to run a webserver so I can test applications and websites before I move them up to a hosted server but I like playing some of the free video games that come with it or watching DVD's or even just suring the web, checking email, or reading RSS feeds. Setting the whole thing up was so easy and painless to configure including the installation of MySQL, Perl, PHP, and Python, known troublemakers.
If you're interested I urge you to check out Ubuntulinux.org. There are live cd's that let you run Linux from the cd rom without ever touching your hard drive so you don't have to worry about damaging your Windows or OS X installation free for the download for almost every system.
Did I mention it's free?
