More power! (chest beating and grunting)...
I found this article i my aggregator this morning. Very interesting. But that's just the geek in me talking.
Promise of ultra-fast downloads.
Net downloads could soon be faster as US researchers have developed a way to speed up the internet.US researchers are working on ways to improve the way that net protocols decide how quickly data travels around the net.
Early tests of the new system show that it can triple data transmission speeds.
By linking lots of the faster systems together the researchers have produced data transfer speeds many times higher than is possible today. [BBC News | Front Page | UK Edition]
Promoting proper email ettiquete...
Employers Try New Rules To Promote E-Mail Etiquette.
As e-mail overload buries computer users world-wide, much of the blame is falling on the cc line, which allows e-mailers to share correspondence with countless colleagues, friends or strangers. For e-mail writers who play office politics, deciding which recipients belong on which lines -- "to," "cc," or "bcc" (blind carbon copy) -- has become a daily struggle. Many resort to unnecessary cc-ing and sneaky bcc-ing, inadvertently spilling proprietary information, or inappropriately copying an underling or boss. [Computerworld News]
Discretion and commensense are the name of the game. I see dozens of emails daily, both personal and business, that really have no reason to be cc'd to the person they're going to. Email has become just another casualty in the war to CYA (cover your ass).
Na na naa na naa naa hey hey hey goodbye....
Ahhh. It appears Horst is on his way out also.
Wanted. I'm looking for new software to manage my blog. Radio UserLand simply isn't up to the task anymore. I need something that can easily be used with Mac OS X, that supports trackback, multiple archive formats and multiple authors and that is less buggy than Radio. Any ideas? [The Aardvark Speaks]
The honest truth...
C'mon Joe. Give it to us straight. We can take it.
Joe: Great idea, crappy software, and lack of upgrades, all rolled into one.
Bing! Bing! Bing! Give that man a cigar. That would be the reason that I didn't move CampinGuy.com and make it a Radio site. It's still a MovableType site and I plan to keep it that way. Other people I know have left Userland and even slowed their bloggins as a result of their unhappiness with Radio. This is especially bad when these people were once proponents of Userland software. It's been a long time since Radio 8 came out. Maybe they should work on an upgrade. If not, I forsee a shrinkage of their market share.
Oh yeah. What's up with Userland and Blogshares?
In Addendum: Newzcrawler lets me post to MT via the aggregator.
California passes anitspam legislation...
Well it's about time.
California senate passes antispam bill. The bill presents an "opt-in" requirement requiring spammers to have permission before sending e-mail if they do not already have a business relationship with the recipient. [Computerworld News]
Capitalizing on a capitalist idea...
So a few months ago Dane and I were having a conversation that went something like this:
Loyd: You know, I just figured out a way to make money with this wi-fi thing.
Dane: How?
Loyd: We set up phone booths all around that have WAP's (Wireless Access Points) on top and sell service. There's so many phone booths around pretty soon we'd have the whole city wireless.
Although SOME people weren't taking me seriously others had the same idea and capitalized on it. Here's your proof.
Verizon Sets Up Phone Booths to Give Access to the Internet
Verizon Communications yesterday introduced one of the oldest items in its inventory — the humble phone booth — as its newest weapon in the bitter competition to dominate the broadband communications market of the future.Verizon said that subscribers to its high-speed Internet access service would be able to go online wirelessly at no charge when they are near a Verizon phone booth in Manhattan. [NY Times]
What's up with that...
For over a week now I have not been able to get any information about links to my sites from Google. I can understand about DailyThing as it's new but CampinGuy should ATLEAST be generating the 30 or so links it was previously.
BlogMatcher...
While checking the referrer logs this evening I noticed an interesting URL so I followed it back to the source, BlogMatcher. What is BlogMatcher? BlogMatcher is an appliance into which you enter a weblog, BlogMatcher then searches and finds like weblogs based upon your links as common interests. Here's a list generated when I entered the URL of DailyThing. Tres cool.
A host of viruses...
New e-mail worm exploits SARS anxiety.
In the latest example of computer virus writers capitalizing on current events, a new e-mail worm uses fears about SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) to entice users into opening a file attachment, infecting host machines and helping spread the virus to other machines on the Internet. .Net? .Com? .Microsoft?
Interesting. I see Microsoft has partnered up with Melbourne IT to offer the option of doing a whois/registration lookup of failed URL's.
The only problem is they think $35 a year is a good price to register your domain name.
Woo hoo! I think...
Borders Goes Live. Borders launches its T-Mobile service in several states, 145 stores: Borders had announced last November that it had partnered with T-Mobile to put hot spot service in all Borders stores in the US. Today, they announced all stores in California, Florida, Georgia, Michigan, New Jersey, Texas, and Washington have gone live, or 145 stores total.... [Wi-Fi Networking News]
Special Thanks...
I'm gonna have to give a big thanks to Blue Nomad software. They were nice enough to send me a new code for their Wordsmith word processor application for my Clie. What a great company. If you have a Palm it's definetely a great program. It not only offers integration with MS Office but also allows you to create and implement fonts on your Palm OS device.
