It’s NOT the Same

This morning we were out of our regular coffee so I decided to try this free sample that came in the mail. I’m sure you see where this is going already.

I’m not going to mention names but the coffee that came in the mail was from a large chain that is trying to move into the coffee market after a somewhat successful run at the doughnut market. Ok, it was Dunkin’ Doughnuts.

Odds are if you spend any time in front of the TV you’ve seen their commercials where they’re working hard to brand themselves the “blue collar” coffee as opposed to the turtleneck wearing-mac loving other crowd who hang out at that other place where you almost have to speak a foreign language just to get a cup o’ joe.

I’m getting off-track. Let’s get back to the coffee shall we? I ran fresh, cold water like normal, rinsed out the filter basket and carafe, put in a clean filter and opened the package. Pre-ground. Bad news already.

Out of the package the coffee smells pretty good and brewing I’m going to have to say was not bad smelling either. Color is a nice dark red-brown color indicative of a South American bean and a medium roast.

I drink coffee like most people drink wine. I look for smell, color, taste, finish and body and I can discern a good coffee from a bad coffee so when I say what I’m about to say know that this is just my opinion and you’ll need to try it yourself. If this is the “working mans coffee” I’m never drinking coffee again.

If you are a working man (and I am) and you think this is your coffee, no. Step back. Put that styrofoam cup down. We can get through this.

What places like Starbucks and Peets Coffee (and a host of other local coffee roasters) have figured out is: 1) Freshness is key and 2) Blend it.

Let’s just glance over point 1 quickly. If you want to sell a good coffee take a look at Starbucks bags. That’s right bags not cans. The coffee is fresh ground and sealed in a bag with a 1 way vent so that gases that would degrade the taste of the coffee can escape. Freeze-drying kills the taste. Freeze-drying and canning (or sealing in non-vented bags) are a no-no. And if you can, sell whole bean if possible.

Good wine makers know that good wine must be properly blended. Same with coffee. Beans from different parts of the world have different flavors. To my palate beans from Asia are more acidic and lighter in color. Beans from South America seem to have an almost sour taste while beans from Hawaii are very bold. African beans seem almost bitter to me.

So take a little from here and a little from there and blend them into something enjoyable to drink. A pure blend from a particular region is often too strong and overpowering for the average coffee drinker. I’m not sure if the sample they sent out was a pure blend but the flavor was definitely indicative of such.

Well that’s it. Dunkin’ Doughnuts - I don’t love your coffee. Bleh! But that’s just my opinion. Everyone else try it and see what you think. If you like it, feel free to post a comment and let me know what you like about it.

Coffee CAN Really Help You Succeed at Work

The Monster Blog: “In a word, yes. As much as we love to hate it and fear its speculated detrimental effects, it turns out coffee can actually be an effective on-the-job tool, according to a recent Time Magazine article. (Quick pause for the angelic hallelujah cry.)

Specifically, coffee, and caffeine in general, not only allows you to be alert but also boosts your mental performance — sharpening your short-term memory and making you more clever, quick-witted and focused.”

Yessss!

Coke To Launch Coffee-infused Coke

Yahoo! News: Coca-Cola Co., the world’s No. 1 soft drink company, on Wednesday said it will launch a coffee-infused soft drink called Coca-Cola Blak in various markets around the world in 2006.

The news of the launch came hours before Coke Chief Executive Neville Isdell was scheduled to address financial analysts and investors in New York.

The new drink, a combination of Coca-Cola Classic and coffee extracts, will be first launched in France in January before being rolled out in the United States and other markets during 2006.

A Coke spokesperson said Coca-Cola Blak will be a mid-calorie drink, similar to Coca-Cola C2, which was launched in April 2004 and contains half the sugar, calories and carbohydrates of regular colas. The formula for the new beverage is expected to vary based on local tastes.

Coffee CAN Make You Smarter, In The Short Term

It appears some Austrian researchers have discovered that moderate amounts of caffeine can improve your short term memory.

Forbes: Those morning cups of java might sharpen your memory so you can better tackle the tasks of the day, a new Austrian study suggests.

Scientists at the Innsbruck Medical University discovered that 100 milligrams of caffeine, the equivalent of two cups of coffee, increased activity in the part of the brain that is responsible for short-term memory, and improved performance on a test that measures memory function.

“We found modulation of a distinct brain area within the working memory network was more activated under caffeine compared to the placebo condition. This is the specific brain region which would be used for short-term memory function,” said study author Dr. Florian Koppelstatter, a radiology fellow at the university.

These functions include being able to prioritize information to manage tasks efficiently, as well as plan new tasks and deal with stored information, he said. An example would be the process of looking up a number in a telephone book, and remembering it so you could dial the number.

Birthday Surprises

A big ‘thank you’ to my loving wife who splurged and got me an early birthday present. What’d I get? One of the wildly-popular coffee machines that use the pads.

I didn’t get the Senseo brand but that’s OK, this one works just as well and the pods seem to work just fine. We picked up some extra pods at the local grocery and I must say, the coffee is pretty good. Now, if I can just find pods similar to the italian coffee my in-laws brought me back from Italy. That stuff rocked.

I am possibly the only person in the world who can drink a Quad-Shot Capuccino from Starbucks then go to bed and sleep a full 10 hours.

Coffee Quote of the Day

Jay Allen : “I climbed the stairs and entered the shadowy lair of the magic coffee-making gnome. It’s not that I need coffee to wake up, you understand, but sometimes it’s really nice to start the morning knowing that you will be able to successfully go through the day without killing someone.”

Morning Shots

06-16-04_0628.jpgMmmmmm. Doesn’t that look good? Nothing like a nice cup of coffee to get your blood flowing in the morning. Even though the cup may say “Starbucks” that’s a brew of my favorite local roast with just enough sweet and creaminess to make you think you’re having a caffeinated desert for breakfast.

World Travelers

My mother and father in law are great. Since my father in law retired they’ve taken to visiting exotic and foreign places. Lucky for me they’re nice enough to pick up some coffee on their travels. They picked up this package in a small family coffee house in Italy. Since my Italian sucks I’m going to have to rely on the Google translation of “cream and taste”. The coffee inside is a super fine grind for automatic perk pots popular in Europe but it does just fine in my automatic drip maker. It’s pretty good coffee with a robust and smooth flavor. Very little acidity.

Thanks again Nana and Papa.

The Rules of Coffee

Am I breaking some kind of rule by drinking Seattle’s Best out of my Starbucks mug? Henry’s Blend is very good. Thanks Gina!
