What Clients Really Want

There was a great article over at HOWdesign about what clients really want from a design firm. If you’re a designer, or even a client, this is a definite read.

HOWdesign.com: Consultant Joe Grant has interviewed thousands of companies that buy advertising and design‚Äîin other words, your clients‚Äîto find out what they really want in their relationships with design firms. Communication and trust are the dominant themes. “Over and over, agencies and clients get into trouble because they don’t take the time to clearly spell out what they expect from each other, including roles and responsibilities,” Grant says.

Grant’s “Top 10 List of Client Wants” is a set of precautionary principles that can help you bolster client relationships before those cracks appear. “Doing the ostrich thing is definitely not a good approach with client relationships,” Grant says. “You need to be proactive about keeping them happy and your relationship healthy.” How? By meeting 10 basic client needs.

Make It Round

If the target demographic you’re designing for is female, there’s something you should know: make it round.

No joke. Molly has a great article and some insight into what attracts male and female users to particular designs. Men prefer straight and more angular things while women often opt for designs characterized by the use of circles. Here’s an excerpt.

Molly: “That women like circles and men prefer straight lines is no accident. If we look to known archetypes, the circle signifies the feminine and attributes considered to be feminine: curves, community and cooperative communication. The straight line signifies the male not only physically, but in terms of representing focus and linear thought and communication.”

Be sure to read the rest of Molly’s commentary. Very interesting.

The Zen of CSS Design

I picked up a copy of Dave Shea and Molly Holzschlag’s book“The Zen of CSS Design. Very good. If you’re a web designer or just someone who likes to dabble this is a book you can’t afford to miss. It steps into different CSS designs from the CSS Zen Garden and breaks down what the author of the design did each time, why, and how it works.

This is one you won’t want to pass up.
